Jessica and Doug got married in the beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona. Their ceremony was at the Nordic Center and their reception was held at Thornagers.
They now live in Texas, but Flagstaff is a very nostalgic place for them and that is why they decided there was no better place to make it official! They even got married at the same place they got engaged (The Nordic Center)!
They actually met in Flagstaff while both going to NAU for their graduate degrees, the story of how they came to date always makes me smile because it is not too unfamiliar from my own. Jess needed a roommate and so they ended up moving in together. Then about six months down the road, they started dating!
They both have different ideas though of what was their first official date. Doug seems to remember some vague memory of taking her out to a bad Indian food place (their favorite food) early on in their relationship. Jess personally believes their first real date was ‘Second Thanksgiving’ which she says is “exactly what it sounds like”. They went to a friends for Thanksgiving and were disappointed their were no leftovers so they decided to have a do-over a cook a whole dinner for themselves!
Jess says their proposal story makes up for their ‘abysmal beginning’. Right after Christmas they decided they wanted to go snow-skiing in the mountains so they booked a yurt at the Arizona Nordic Center. Jess was definitely suspicious because Doug kept telling her she’d get her Christmas present in Flagstaff.
They got to their yurt and there was a giant hill behind it that people said was a must to hike to the top and see the most gorgeous view of sunset. Doug jumped all over the idea and then Jessica started getting really anxious/excited that it was really going to happen! They get to the top and Jessica describes it as stunning and the most beautiful views in all of Arizona. She starts watching Doug like a hawk, but he is just relaxing and watching the sunset and as the sun goes down she realizes it’s not going to happen.
The next day, they decide to go back up the hill to watch sunset again. They get about half way up and Doug says “Ah crap! I forgot my phone in the yurt” and goes scrambling down the mountain. All Jess can think about is how they’re going to miss the sunset and says he took ‘approximately three lifetimes to find his phone”. He finally comes back and they make it to the top, and it is just as gorgeous as the day before. They walked along the ridge a bit and then Doug asks “Do you want your Christmas present??” Then he got down on one knee in the snow and proposed.
Once the sun had set they hiked back down the hill and in the yurt Doug had laid rose petals everywhere and somehow smuggled champagne and two glasses up the mountain without her noticing.
I always ask couples to use one word to describe themselves as a couple, Doug and Jess chose ‘complimentary’ and I couldn’t agree more.
She is a fiery and funny with a laugh that you just can’t help but laugh when she does. He is a strong and steady type that just brings a sort of calmness wherever he goes. Together, they just bring out the best in each other.
Their wedding day definitely reflected their laid-back personalities. Like most wedding days, there were a few hiccups in the timeline but neither one of them let it affect them and their moods and because of that (and a great timeline with lots of buffer) we were able to get everything caught back up to speed and right on track!
The weather was absolutely fantastic, it actually felt like fall in Arizona! Even some of the trees were starting to change, it was gorgeous!
Jessica’s best advice to future couples is to get the big stuff knocked out early, make sure you take breaks, and have fun. You don’t want to get to the end and feel bitter, or drained.
Jess and Doug – I am so happy to have gotten to know you both over this process! You are just a ray of sunshine to be around and I’m only sad you live a couple states over and that we can’t have drinks on a regular basis!
